Helen Hayes Brown was born in Washington, D.C. on October 10, 1900. Her parents were Frank and Catherine “Essie” Brown. With her mother’s encouragement, Hayes made her stage debut at the age of five and began performing both in amateur productions as well as the stock company, The Columbia Players. Bernstein met Thomas Wolfe in 1925 on a voyage between Europe and New York. Wolfe and Bernstein, the wife of a prominent New York stock broker and 18 years older than Wolfe, became lovers in Oct. 1925 and remained so for the next five years.
